Explore Evie Ring’s Data and Metrics

At Evie, we’re not “just another health tracking ring.” We’re redefining the standard for women’s health wearables with devices built to medical-grade standards to empower women with gender-specific, action-oriented, precision data.

More people than ever are interested in improving their health.1 But as many of us know firsthand, that’s easier said than done. That’s where wearable health technology comes in handy. Data from the Pew Research Center found that about 1 in 5 adults in the United States used wearable health technology.2 And that was back in 2019!

But when it comes to the precision of health data, not all wearable technologies are equal — particularly for women.

This is largely because most wearable technology doesn’t provide differentiated insights for men and women, even with well-proven biological differences.

You might be wondering if women's sex hormones make that much of a difference. The answer is yes. Where you are in your cycle and whether you’re peri- or postmenopausal can contribute to differences in:

  • Resting heart rate
  • Temperature
  • Length of time in sleep stages
  • Quality of sleep
  • Energy levels
  • Mood
  • Metabolism
  • Exercise capacity
  • And more

An important note. Hormone profiles are unique to each of us and exist on a spectrum. Any person (woman, intersex, or otherwise) who experiences regular hormonal shifts within the spectrum of biological females may experience similar shifts in their health data over time.

Evie Ring is one of the only wearable technologies designed specifically for women’s health.

Accuracy and reliability are two of the biggest factors women care about in their health data.

In our opinion, women deserve wearable health technology that takes into account your unique body composition and deciphers how that impacts your health outcomes.

That’s where the idea for Evie Ring was born.

We created a smart ring for women that pairs trusted health metrics with data-driven, actionable insights to help women better understand and elevate their health.

We use rigorous testing and checkpoints throughout development and manufacturing to build credibility in the Evie solution all before it arrives at your front door.

Our engineering quality team ensures proper product design and testing procedures are followed and that data security meets FDA standards. We also employ a contract manufacturer that follows FDA quality system requirements to ensure Evie’s production quality aligns with standard medical devices.

So without further ado, here’s an inside look at Evie Ring’s metrics.

Evie’s Metrics

The Evie Ring uses a combination of advanced sensors, user-logged information, and sophisticated algorithms to track key health and wellness metrics and give you insight into your body. Let’s take a look at some of the automatically collected metrics Evie tracks.

Heart rate

Heart rate refers to the number of times your heart beats per minute (BPM). A healthy range for the average adult woman is between 78 to 82 BPM. (Comparatively, the average healthy range for men sits between 70-72 BPM.)3

Of course, each person’s healthy range for resting heart rate (RHR) looks different. People who exercise more often have lower resting heart rates. RHRs can also range higher during pregnancy and the ovulatory and luteal phases of menstruation.4, 5

This is why gender-differentiated wearable tech is so essential. Without accounting for these differences, women’s average heart rate could be considered high when it’s actually within a healthy range.

The Evie Ring measures your heart rate in three ways:

  1. Day/Night - every five minutes during waking hours and while you’re sleeping
  2. Workout Mode - every minute while you’re logging a workout
  3. Spot Check mode - measures your heart rate in real time for 40 seconds.

Evie Ring passively samples and tracks your heart rate 24/7. It periodically samples your heart rate as you sleep and will give you your average RHR when you wake up.

When you start a workout, Evie increases the frequency of heart rate sampling to give you more specific insights into your heart rate and caloric burn.

You can also activate a Spot Check anytime you want a live heart rate reading, which measures your heart rate over 40 seconds.

Heart rate variability

Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the variations in time between heartbeats. HRV is often used to evaluate recovery (how quickly your heart rhythms return to your baseline after a stressor.)

Let’s say you finish a hard workout. Your heart rate will quicken during the workout, then return to your RHR over the next few minutes. A higher HRV means your heart recovers more quickly from the workout, which is considered a sign of good health.

Together, HRV and heart rate can provide valuable insights that help you understand when you’re experiencing stress and may want to prioritize rest and recovery.

Of course, “normal” heart rate variability looks different for each of us. So Evie analyzes your biometrics to assess your unique baseline HRV.

Blood oxygen levels (SpO2)

SpO2 measures the amount of oxygen in your blood and is presented as a percentage. A score of 95-100% SpO2 is considered an indicator of good health.

Blood oxygen levels below 90% saturation are referred to as hypoxia. With hypoxia, the body isn’t receiving enough oxygenated blood to continue functioning in a balanced state. This can happen for many reasons, including poor lung or heart health. If your blood oxygen levels are below 90%, you may want to reach out to a physician for specialized care.

You can use Evie’s Spot Check feature to track your blood oxygen levels for 40 seconds in real-time to give you extremely precise insights.

Sleep quality

Sleep can be your greatest ally… or feel like your worst enemy. Getting a good night’s sleep gives your body time to rest, repair itself, restore its energy, benefit your memory, boost energy, support heart health and immunity, and so much more.

But getting 7-8 hours of sleep doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting quality sleep. Each sleep stage is associated with unique processes that are all essential to your overall health.

Evie Ring functions as a powerful sleep tracker that creates a comprehensive picture of your sleep health. It monitors:

  • Sleep patterns
  • Sleeping respiration rate
  • Time spent in each sleep stage

The Evie Ring then assesses your other biometrics with your sleep data to let you know when your sleep may be affecting your health. Evie will also send tips you can use to improve your sleep habits for a better night’s sleep.

An added bonus? Evie Ring is built with a sleek design that flexes throughout the night, so it adjusts to the natural swelling that often occurs.

Respiration rate

Your respiration rate refers to the timing and quality of your breathing and can offer key insights into lung health and circulation. High-quality, gender-differentiated data is needed here, as women tend to have a higher baseline respiratory rate, smaller airways, and a differently shaped ribcage than men.6, 7

A higher rate of breathing has been linked with activation of our internal stress response system, a lower HRV, heart health issues, pneumonia, and other poor health outcomes.8

Slow, deep breathing, on the other hand, has been found to increase heart rate variability and support our rest and relax response.8

The Evie Ring monitors your respiration rate to establish your personal baseline for health and measures it throughout the night.

Skin temperature

Skin temperature is an often overlooked but key indicator of wellbeing. Each morning, as part of your sleep analysis, you can view your skin temperature variation average from the prior night. Our skin temperature naturally shifts as we drift to sleep and can be an indicator of our circulation, general health, and where we are in our menstrual cycle.

At this time, skin temp variation isn't factored directly into ovulation estimations. However, it’s something we're working to add in the future.

Steps, activity levels, and calories

Did you know that moderately increasing your daily steps has been linked with a longer lifespan? A study of more than 16,000 older women found those who averaged at least 4,400 steps a day had lower mortality rates than women averaging only 2,700 steps daily. Benefits for a longer lifespan progressively increased all the way to 7,500 steps/day before plateauing.9

Using its accelerometer, Evie tracks your steps and active minutes to support your health goals on all fronts. It also tracks your heart rate with your daily steps to give you detailed insights into your fitness levels and daily calorie burn.

User Logged Metrics

The metrics we explored above are all collected passively, meaning you don’t have to lift a finger for them to be measured, tracked, and logged. To further enhance your data’s specificity, Evie also invites you to log metrics, including menstrual symptoms, mood, and workouts.

Workouts

Nourishing your body through muscle-strengthening movement and heart-rate-boosting sweat sessions can greatly impact both daily and long-term health. For instance, a regular movement routine has been linked with improved mood, better general health, and even better brain health.10

Evie Ring enables you to track your workouts in real-time. Simply start your workout on the app, and Evie Ring will track your heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, and distance traveled. At the end you’ll have a detailed report of your workout, allowing you to spot areas for improvement, connect the dots between your workouts and daily wellbeing, and more.

Menstrual symptoms and period logging

Where you are in your menstrual cycle can have a surprisingly large impact on health data. For instance, did you know you may benefit from different exercise strategies throughout your cycle? Or that differing levels of hormones throughout your cycle can affect your sleep quality?

You can log and track your cycle and symptoms through Evie, giving you more insights into how your menstrual cycle may be affecting other parts of your health.

Using the first date of your last period and your period and cycle length, Evie shows you a future estimation for your fertility window, ovulation date, and period in a calendar format. By tracking your menstrual symptoms, you’ll be able to identify patterns to help you better manage your wellbeing.

Mood and energy

Few things make the difference between a good day and a bad day like your mood and how energized you feel. You could have everything go right, but if you’re low on energy and in a crummy mood, you’re likely to call it a bad day.

Our mood and energy levels live in a reciprocal continuum with all our other health metrics. They’re both the end result of your health and contribute to your health in other areas.

Evie Ring invites you to log your mood and energy levels every day, so you can better understand what health factors may be impacting your mood and energy, and vice versa. Over time, you can use this information to spot patterns in what elevates your mood and energy so you can proactively cultivate opportunities for more energy and enjoyment.
